Meeting with the Ethiopian Universities Presidents: Presentation of the educational cooperation programs implemented in Ethiopia

On Friday, 15th of November, the Embassy of France and the Ethio-French Alliance of Addis Ababa hosted a delegation of representatives from more than 15 Ethiopian universities for a meeting dedicated to French educational cooperation program in Ethiopia.

Representatives of the Universities of Addis Ababa, Adigrat, Aksum, Bahir Dar, Gondar, Hawassa, Jigjiga, Jimma, Mekelle, Saint Mary, Debre Zeit as well as New Generation College and Ibex College, Addis Ababa Institute of Technology and Catering and Tourism Training Institute met with representatives of the Cultural and Cooperation Department of the Embassy of France, the Ethio-French Alliances of Addis Ababa and Dire Daoua, the French Center for Ethiopian Studies (CFEE ) and the Ethio-French Lycée Guebe-Mariam. On this occasion, the actors of the French cooperation in Ethiopia presented the activities implemented in the sector of education:

- Linguistic cooperation: in the framework of the project "Structuring and Development of the Francophonie in Ethiopia", the Embassy of France in partnership with the two Ethio-French Alliances is opening French-language centers in the university network. The development of French teaching in the university network is accompanied by a plan for linguistic and pedagogical training for French teachers thanks to the Ethio-French Alliances and their partners (the University of Réunion and the University of Mans).

- University cooperation: In a second step, the representative of Campus France in Ethiopia and the scientific secretary of the French Center for Ethiopian Studies (CFEE) presented their activities in Ethiopia. The Embassy of France presented the overall strategy of the French government in terms of academic cooperation and the stated priorities of developing higher education partnerships. For this, three programs were specifically presented: the Hubert Curien partnership program, the Partnerships for African Higher Education Institutions (PAI) and the Support Program for the Development of French Higher Education in Africa (ADESFA).

Throughout these presentations, Ethiopian higher education institutions have expressed their willingness to open French-language centers in their institutions and to develop partnerships with French higher education institutions. The Embassy of France was able to gather their needs and the areas in which these universities wanted to develop partnerships.

Following this meeting, three new tripartite cooperation agreements were signed between the Embassy of France, the Ethio-French Alliance of Addis Ababa and Bahir Dar University, Aksum University and Catering and Tourism Training Institute.

This initiative was held in the framework of the "Study in Europe" exhibition organized by the European Commission in partnership with Campus France, which gathered more than 11 European countries on Friday, 16th of November, at Skylight Hotel to present their higher education system and their mobility programs. The following day, more than 4000 Ethiopian students participated in the fair and had the chance to meet with the representatives of these 11 European countries.
