Visit of Mrs Bricq, Minister of Foreign Trade (19-20 december 2013)
The French Minister of foreign trade, Mrs Nicole Bricq arrived on Thursday 19th in Addis Abeba for a two day official visit.
The Minister of Foreign Trade, Mrs Bricq, reiterated the determination of the French government to enhance even further the economic, financial and commercial relations between France and Ethiopia. To that purpose, Mrs Bricq was accompanied by French firms , large and SME, which represented a large range of expertise, experience and know how in domains such as power generation and transportation, renewable energies, aircraft, logistics, security systems, telecommunication systems and services, road equipment, water and waste engineering and equipment, banking services, satellite equipment and services, cosmetics, consumer goods, human nutrition, urban transport, certification capacity, agro-industry and engineering for infrastructures.
On the 19th, the Minister co-chaired with HE Mr Debretsion Gebremichaël the opening session of the first “French Ethiopian Business Forum” that gathered more than 220 participants. With the participation of the Ethiopian Chamber and the Addis Abeba Chamber of Commerce as well as the French Trade commission UbiFrance, in a B to B networking meetings format, the Forum aimed at creating commercial and industrial partnership between the enterprises of both countries.
During her visit, Mrs Bricq met HE Mr Hailemariam Dessalegn, Prime minister and HE Mr Sufian Ahmed, Minister of Finances and Economic development . During this last meeting, two financial agreements of an amount of 70M€ presented by French Development agency have been signed.
During her stay in Ethiopia, Mrs Bricq visited a French-Ethiopian firm specialized in enriched food to combat malnutrition (Hilina PLC) accompanied by the vice-ministers of agriculture, of trade and of industry. On Friday morning, she visited the wind farm of Ashegoda (close to Makele), accompanied by the Minister of energy and water. In the afternoon, she visited the training center of Ethiopian Airlines (which building has been funded by Agence Française de Développement) and had a meeting with the CEO of the company.
She also met at the Embassy of France with representatives of the French community in Ethiopia.
This important visit closes a very fruitful year for the French-Ethiopian relationship. The Ethiopian Prime Minister, HE Mr Hailemariam Dessalegn, met three times the French President, Mr François Hollande (last time in Paris, on 6-7 December). Ethiopian authorities also received the visit of the French minister of Foreign affairs (Mr L. Fabius, January), of the Minister in charge of Development (Mr P. Canfin, July) and of two senatorial delegations in May and in September. This trend of visit is an illustration of the willingness of the two countries to strengthen their relationship.
