School feeding program - SNNPR
As part of its food aid in Ethiopia, France is supporting a school feeding program in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Region (SNNPR). This program, led by the Ethiopian federal and regional authorities and implemented with the support of the World Food Program (WFP), provides at least one meal per day to students attending many of the primary schools in SNNPR, particularly in areas where the enrollment rate was still low a few years ago.
This program also aims at increasing the enrollment rate for girls, now close to parity after having been significantly lower than the enrollment rate for boys. The food supplied within this program is entirely produced in SNNPR by farmers’ cooperatives. During a field trip in April 2018, the Embassy was able to confirm that the program was properly implemented, especially thanks to the involvement of local communities. Local communities support the program in many different ways, including funding the preparation of meals, and in some cases supplementing the food provided.
