Round table on "The French language in Ethiopia and the assets of plurilingualism" [fr]

On Tuesday, March 15, 2022, the Ras Mekonnen room of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies of Addis Ababa University hosted the first event of the 125 years agenda, in the form of a round table on "The French language in Ethiopia and the assets of plurilingualism". It gathered more than 80 people, doctoral students, high school students from the Guebré Mariam High School, Ethiopian French teachers, diplomats, and others curious about sociolinguistics.

The first three speakers, Dr. Ahmed Hassen, Dr. Yohonnes Beyene and Dr. Zelealem Leyew, Professors at Addis Ababa University, evoked the historical circumstances of the introduction of French in Ethiopia and specified the place of the French language in the Ethiopian multilingual landscape.

The second part allowed to question the choice of another language in a logic of employability and professional valorization. Testimonies from H.E. Mr. Pavel Mikes, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Ethiopia, H.E. Mr. Henok Teferra, Ambassador of Ethiopia to France, and Nadège Tandu, Director of Human Resources Management at the African Union Commission, provided personal and institutional insights, in a logic of individual insertion and support for the regional integration process. Finally, this round-table ended with a presentation by the heads of training centers, in areas of expertise that support multilingualism and promote the Francophonie: Mr. Jérôme Guyon, International Partnerships and Ms. Cécile Boss, Head of the Language Unit, National Institute of Public Service (INSP) and Ms. Antonia Cristinoi-Bursuc, Deputy Director, Ecole Supérieure d’Interprétariat et de Traduction (ESIT)
