Passing away of the Prime minister of Ethiopia, Meles Zenawi
Communique from the President of the French Republic, Francois HOLLANDE
The passing away of the Ethiopian Prime minister, Meles Zenawi, who ruled his country since 1991, represents a great loss for Ethiopia.
I would like to pay tribute, in particular, to his commitment in the service of Africa and of its development as well as his tireless efforts to promote peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.
With the Prime minister Meles Zenawi, Ethiopia and France led together common fights against climate change and in favour of a tax on the financial transactions.
I address to the peoples and to the Ethiopian authorities my most sincere condolences.

It was with deep sadness that I learned of the passing away of the Prime minister, Meles Zenawi. Please accept my deepest condolences on my behalf and on behalf of the French government.
Meles Zenawi was one of the greatest African statesmen, not only dedicated to his country’ interests but also of those of the whole continent. He spoke up for Africa in the international organizations and was very successful.
I would also like to pay tribute to his enormous contribution towards the broadening of the cooperation between Ethiopia and France in every field, in particular in the field of cultural exchanges.
France has the feeling to having lost a great leader whose voice mattered not only in Africa but in the world stage.
Message of condolence of the French minister of Foreign affairs, Laurent FABIUS
In this mournful day, I would like to extend my condolences to the Prime Minister’s family and share the sadness of the people of Ethiopia.
Unfortunately, the President of the French Republic could not attend the ceremony in person, so he asked Ms Yamina Benguigui, deputy Minister of foreign affairs to represent him in this occasion.
Determined and visionary, Meles Zenawi let a rich legacy to the history of Ethiopia. I would like to pay tribute to a man acknowledged by his african peers, as well as the whole international community for his skills, his self-denial and his tireless efforts to make the Africa’s voice mattered in the world stage.
Through his personal involvement in the Sudanese peace process and for sustainable peace in Somalia, he played a vital role in favour of stability in East Africa.
I would like to assure you of my commitment to strengthening and deepening the friendship and the partnership that bond our two countries.
I’m convinced that yourself, along with the Ethiopian government, are willing to follow Meles’s legacy to inspire the development of your economy, to advocate democracy and to contribute to peace and security.
