Ceremony of November 11th at Gulele [fr]

This year again, as every year on November 11th, the diplomatic community gathered for a moving ceremony at the Commonwealth War Cemetery in Addis Ababa (Gulele). With the commemoration of the centenary of the Great War in 2018, such an event took on a very special dimension. The tribute to the fighters of the nations involved in this terrible conflict, the memory of nearly 20 million civilian and military deaths, peace and European reconciliation were strongly mentioned by the speakers. At the invitation of the British Embassy, Remembrance Day was an opportunity for everyone to pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for their country on the battlefields of the Somme, Marne and Verdun but also on the fronts of the East, Italy, the Balkans, the Middle East and even Africa.

In addition, as per the wish of the Head of State since 2011, a special tribute was paid to our French soldiers who died in operations during the year. At the French square of the Gulele military cemetery, in front of the three tombs of the airmen who died in 1940 and in front of the National Union of Fighters (UNC) flag worn for the occasion, the French ambassador and the French community paid them a particular tribute:

-  21 February 2018 - Staff Sergeant Emilien MOUGIN (Operation Barkhane)
-  February 21, 2018 - Brigadier Chief Thimoté DERNONCOURT (Operation Barkhane)
-  March 21, 2018 - Corporal Bogusz POCHYLSKI (Operation Chammal)
-  April 20, 2018 - Sergeant Anthony PAIBA VALVERDE (Mayotte)
-  May 11, 2018 - Master Romuald LE ROUX (mission "Ventôse")
