Kebruatena kebruan Enkuan Bedehna wede Ferensay Embassy Metachu. Betam Bezu yeferensay wedajoch tesebasbew bemayeté talak desta yesemagnal.

On behalf of all the Embassy team, I sincerely thank you for honouring us by your presence on Bastille Day.

Let me start by congratulating the World Cup winner, Germany, but also Brazil which organised a splendid event. As Brazil will be hosting the next Olympics, we are looking forward to an opportunity to, finally, win medals,

Ladies and gentlemen,

Today the French people is uniting around the founding values of the French Revolution : liberty, equality, fraternity. They are universal yearnings. We believe in particular that freedom of opinion and expression is a pillar of democracy.

This morning, in Paris, to commemorate the centenary of the start of the 1st World War, representatives of 80 countries marched on the Champs Elysées. The message was one of remembrance but also of peace and reconciliation between the nations involved in this tragedy. I am glad that a delegation of the Ethiopian Parliament attended the parade, at the invitation of the French Senate.

Ladies and gentlemen,

I would now like to invite you to flip through the photo album of the year for France in Ethiopia, to illustrate our strengthening partnership with our host country as well as with the African union.

The Prime Minister Haïlemariam participated to the launch of the first Castel vintage in Ethiopia. I would like to congratulate Castel for producing an Ethiopian wine of international quality and for showing confidence in the development of our host country through this important investment. I would also like to thank Castel for offering us today to taste its different wines from Ziway and also for supporting the Ethio-French Alliance.

Let me also warmly thank Gallica, Peugeot and Total for their contribution to today’s reception. I also wish to congratulate Total for its action regarding road safety and for its support to an Artist Residence at the Alliance. The first artist to benefit from it will exhibit his fantastic work later on this year.

To raise our economic partnership with Ethiopia to the level of our excellent political relation, we convened in Addis-Ababa the first French-Ethiopian Business Forum. Opened by the Deputy Prime minister in charge of Economic affairs and the French Foreign Trade minister, it was attended by more than 200 companies, many coming to Ethiopia for the first time. To continue to raise awareness about the potential of Ethiopia, a new edition will take place at the end of the year in Paris.

These students from the Menelelik II school are the 1st class of an Ethiopian public school which had the opportunity to learn French, after 40 years of interruption of teaching French in the public system. They passed so brilliantly that we are expanding the experiment, in cooperation with the Ministry of education, to 5 other schools, 3 outside of Addis-Ababa.

This spectacular wind farm in Ashegoda, near Mekelle, was inaugurated by the Ethiopian PM. Built by Vergnet and Alstom, it demonstrates not only the French technological excellence in renewable energy, but also our willingness to support the economic development of Ethiopia, mainly through the French Agency for Development, AFD.

It also illustrates the close cooperation between our 2 countries in the fight against climate change. We do consider Ethiopia as an essential partner, which will contribute to the success of the 2015 Paris Climate Conference.

This conference will be a historic opportunity to reach an ambitious universal agreement on combating climate change. If we fail, we believe we shall not be able to prevent a climatic chaos.

To succeed, we need the full engagement of all our partners. The African Union will play a key role, as the continent is already affected and fully mobilised. We are looking forward to working with the African Union and the Economic Commission for Africa as well as all African countries, in the spirit of partnership that prevailed at the Elysée Summit for peace and security in Africa.

This Summit, at the invitation of the French President, gathered more than 50 African leaders to discuss climate change, economic partnership, and peace and security. PM Hailemariam participated, as chairman of the AU, paying his 2nd visit to Paris last year. At the summit, France reaffirmed her strong support to the African Union and committed to assist in the operationalization of an African military reaction capacity.

In the Central African Republic, the French force Sangaris is supporting the AU mission. Working hand in hand, under very demanding circumstances, they have been able to avoid generalized massacres. As the situation remains fragile, they continue to work tirelessly, with the assistance of the EU and the UN, to bring peace to this country.
