"Biogas backpack" project by Dr. Araya Asfaw
The "Forum Africa 2013 -100 innovations for sustainable development" has selected 100 innovations of which 21 were presented on December 5 in Paris at an event organized ahead of the summit of the Elysée for Peace and Security in Africa. This event has enabled innovators to present their achievements and to develop cooperation with financial partners, businesses, researchers and non-governmental organizations.
More than 800 candidates had responded to the call to innovators launched in September 2013 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, under the leadership of Minister Delegate in charge of Development, Pascal Canfin, in partnership with the French Development Agency (AFD). The rewarded projects go from the construction of High Environmental Quality (HQE) to micro-finance, food, information systems, recycling, agro-ecology or transportation.
Among the 21 projects presented at Paris was the Ethiopian project "biogas backpack" presented by Dr. Araya Asfaw. This backpack for transporting biogas is a technological innovation enabling the easy transport, sale and use of biogas produced in rural villages. Its distribution, promoted in Ethiopia by the Horn of Africa Regional Environment Centre and Network (HoA-REC/N), aims at facilitating the access to clean and affordable energy for the people of African countries.
