A moving decoration to the famous singer Mahmoud Ahmed [fr]
Ambassador of France, Brigitte Collet, presented on July 19th 2016 insignia of Officer in the Order of Arts and Letters to Mahmoud Ahmed, inarguably the best known singer of this country, before a large audience of mainly friends and Ethiopian artists.
The Ambassador outlined the main periods of the exceptional career of Mahmoud Ahmed, from a very humble background and become in a few years the first Ethiopian "pop star" and its decisive contribution to the world of music, through an original synthesis of the most contemporary trends and traditional sounds of Ethiopia.
She highlighted the constant links that Mahmoud Ahmed maintained with France, numerous concerts in our country and its fidelity to the Ethio-French Alliance of Addis Ababa. In the presence of Francis Falceto, great discoverer of Ethiopian music of recent decades, she recalled that the immense fame of Mahmoud Ahmed he also owes him. The ambassador finally underlined that it is through Mahmoud Ahmed that France is also paying tribute to the Ethiopian culture in which it attaches great importance to the promotion of cultural diversity.
The singer, clearly emotional, began by inviting a minute of silence in memory for the victims of the terrorist attack in Nice. He then sang a religious song widely picked up by the audience. He also warmly thanked France and its representatives, adding that the award which was awarded to him actually honored his country and all of the artists.
